HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!!
Happy Valentines Day Everyone! My favorite holiday of the year and being spent all in the glorious country of South Africa! Woke up today and had some breakfast and a fresh mango with some Lichi juice. Superb. And then got to digging up some sand from a termite mound. For the sand from a termite mound is taken from deep within the earth by the termites and when they form their mound they use the secretions from their mouths to "plaster" the sand, which causes the mound to become fire-resistant. So the sand from the termite mound is needed to build some ovens, seeing as concrete or cement would crack and bricks made from finely ground termite sand would not. So I dug up enough sand from the mounds for three ovens. All while three giraffe stood nearby and watched me. There was a baby giraffe among them which was simply awesome to behold and see. Along with the mountains in the backdrop and the large expanse of the Timbavati on both sides of me. Hope everyone has an awesome Valentines and thanks for reading!

ReplyDeleteHi Allen,
ReplyDeleteJust got off the phone with Karen Eastmoore - she asked if we knew your family because we have a cottage in Bay View. My brother-in-law and his family live year round on Walloon. Did you go to HArbor Sprs High? You probably know the Arbaughs. And maybe my niece's frind Luke who works at Kilwins in Petoskey.
Anyway, what an awesome adventure you are on - WOW! That info about the termite mounds is so interesting - who knew? Wonder how they figured that out? Trial and error or by chance I suppose. Our son, William, did some volunteer work in SA during his gap year. I will tell him about your blog. So, have a blast with Marshall - what an amazing adventure! Take care,
Laura Crouse
Thank you everyone for your comments. Yes I do know the Arbaughs Laura! Hunter is actually in my sister's grade and Olivia is a year older than me. Small world. Thank you everyone else for your support.
